PM Harini calls for greater focus on values and spiritual growth

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated that a nation's true progress depends on values, discipline, and spiritual growth, not just physical development. She made these remarks at the unveiling of a metal Samadhi Buddha Statue at Kongoda Sri Gangarama Purana Maha Viharaya, emphasizing the need for restraint and spiritual peace in modern society.
Speaking at the ceremony to unveil a newly constructed metal Samadhi Buddha Statue at the historic Kongoda Sri Gangarama Purana Maha Viharaya in Remunagoda, Kalutara South, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said the true progress of a nation is determined by the values, discipline, and spiritual growth of its people, not by physical development alone.
The Prime Minister noted that modern society, amid rapid social change, requires greater restraint and spiritual peace. She described the installation of the Samadhi Buddha Statue, built using metal donated by local residents, as a significant contribution to the spiritual well-being of the Buddhist community in the area.
Dr. Amarasuriya reaffirmed the government's commitment to preserving Sri Lanka's religious, historical, and cultural heritage, and to continuing support for temple development nationwide. She stated that the Ministry of Buddhasasana and the Central Cultural Fund are implementing programs to conserve ancient murals, paintings, stone inscriptions, and stupas in historic temples, while expanding financial and technical assistance to improve infrastructure at rural temples.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of educating younger generations about the country's historical heritage and protecting archaeological sites for future generations and visitors. She said preserving historic temples is not limited to maintaining physical structures but is essential to safeguarding Sri Lanka's national identity, moral foundation, and cultural heritage.
She further stated that the government aims to build an independent, fair, and harmonious society founded on strong spiritual values, in addition to economic and physical development.
