China to Assist Sri Lanka with Bamboo 'Bio-Fence' Initiative to Address Human-Elephant Conflict

China has agreed to provide technical and research support for Sri Lanka's proposal to use bamboo bio-fences as a sustainable solution to human-elephant conflict. The initiative, discussed during a visit by a Sri Lankan delegation to the International Center for Bamboo and Rattan in Beijing, aims to reduce conflict while creating economic opportunities through bamboo-based industries.
A Sri Lankan delegation led by Deputy Environment Minister Anton Jayakody visited the International Center for Bamboo and Rattan in Beijing to discuss the proposal.
During the talks, the delegation explored bamboo cultivation, modern processing technologies, and industrial products made from bamboo.
Sri Lanka requested China's assistance to develop bamboo bio-fences to mitigate human-elephant conflict, and China pledged support through research, development, and best practices.
The Environment Ministry stated that this environmentally friendly approach is expected to also generate new economic opportunities for local communities through bamboo industries.
The government believes the project will support Sri Lanka's green development goals while addressing a persistent wildlife conservation challenge.
